after a year’s hiatus optimo music disco plates returns with the first of several planned releases.
first up is long time friend phil kieran with an ep made specifically with optimo in mind. it has been tried and tested over recent months and more than ticks all our boxes. we feel confident it will tick yours too.
phil says “the ep was recorded in my house and made up of mostly live percussion performed live by thomas tettey annang. originally from ghana, he moved to belfast some years ago. it just so happens his wife is a close friend of my sisters and that was the first introduction. thomas now runs -releasing rhythms” here in belfast teaching drum classes.
we used a wide selection of traditional african drums that all have their own name, each one has a style and a sound. the rhythms used in this record would stem back to south american rhythms but using african drums. this was a sound and rhythm that influenced early post punk records in new york and still has an influence on dance music today.”

legs 11 was formed when sigmund floyd, of palace of pleasure fame, joined forces with torstein dyrnes from the now defunct playstation duo tøyen, and mysterious bedroom musician nils tveten. during a karaoke-fuelled haze in the seedy parts of oslo, they discovered a shared love of synth pop, post-punk, new wave and house music. drawing on these influences, the band has created a diverse musical universe, ranging from dark repetitive guitar driven tracks, via infectious pop gems, to deep yet melodic dancefloor-orientated grooves. in 2017 they were joined by multi-instrumentalist audun severin eftevåg, who also brought a new instrument into the band: the saxophone! the “another wave” album is hand-picked tracks from their latest works, focusing on a more dancier approach. the house and nu-dance influences of today is mixed with heavy influences from 90’s uk indie-dance acts like the shamen and the madchester scene, and hints of new wave from the 80’s.

this is the third ep by dutch post-techno project monocorpse... his style is evident by now: minimal and dark... a sort of doom techno for the freaked-out dance floor... but this new ep also feels like a soundtrack... rather moody and haunting music which would fit perfect in thrillers and psychological dramas... despite all of this there are some real dance floor tracks on this ep... stuff monocorpse never delivered before in this way...

emotional rescue returns to the the work of remix specialists extraordinaire, razormaid, with a special collection of their remixes of cold wave / dark wave synth band, psyche. featuring unreleased, re-edited and remastered versions of some of the bands most club-based tracks on one ep for the first time. formed in 1982 in edmonton, canada by darrin and stephen huss out of love of the new electronic sounds emanating out of europe, psyche soon forged their own path. influenced by the industrial and post-punk sounds of bands like killing joke and alien sex fiend, as well as the synth pop melodies of groups like soft cell and yazoo, the brothers help precipitate the start of darker electronic goth sound.

the first full artist ep of 2018 is one by a new artist for heist, but a familiar name for any modern day house aficionado: adryiano. after taking 2016 off, he came back guns blazing in 2017, releasing 5 solo eps in 1 year on labels like shall not fade and baka gaijin. his me and you and her ep for heist showcases his contemporary view on classic house and acid, and is an experiment into how much distortion a track can actually handle when youve got a killer sample hook. me and you and her is about as classic as a house track can be and moves in similar fashion as his post-2013 hit ‘on my side. its got a sweet and repetitive vocal loop, some semi-grainy but definitely groovy percussion and a deceptively simple piano hook. add some filtering and youve got a lovely warm house song that can go on forever. the a2 move it, move it moves straight into old-school chicago territory, with a raw af acid bassline. chicago bred jamie 3:26, now residing in its dutch counterpart rotterdam, gives the track a nice old school twist. hes going full 707 on the percussion and has casually added an amazing synth hook to give the remix a true vibe of its own. the ep closes off with fashion country girl: adryianos dystopian view of a world where dolly parton gets mangled through an overdrive, then gets distorted, crushed, mangled, deleted, re-added in 8 bit and then crushed some more. the result is an uptempo roller with more than enough grit, and just enough tongue-in-cheek to make everyone smile a little bit more. yours sincerely, maarten & lars.

cassius select returns to accidental jnr with another 12” to follow on from last years ‘90 / herd’ ep. he once again straddles the genres somewhere between techno, bassline and hardcore. essence is a huge rave cut of broken snare beats and shuffled kicks alongside select’s trademark idiosyncratic vocal snippets. the b-side offers up shaolin soccer a post-dubstep wobble at a house tempo followed by hype hour another piece of broken suedo rave hardcore.

house heaven on 12-inch. a lofty description, but one that fits most excellent unlimited’s latest offering perfectly. in 1990, boy george and simon rogers (the fall) made a record called “generations of love” for george’s post-culture club project, jesus loves you. legendary nyc dj and producer bruce forest was one of several big names brought in to do a set of remixes, and the better days veteran got to work on several contrasting versions of the cut. the mixes heard here, done at london’s famed olympic studios, are slices of utter ecstasy for anyone who has a taste for ‘90s deep house euphoria and ambient dancefloor excursions, but were unfortunately lost amongst the countless alternate mixes. suffice to say, meu is taking matters into our own hands and has remastered and properly packaged these tracks, directly sourced from forest himself, with the full intention to give this erstwhile dollar-record the respect it deserves. the jazz mix opens with a winding piano solo by andy whitmore (spandau ballet, terence trent d’arby, soul ii soul) that lures the listener into a hypnotic groove that could quite comfortably go on forever but here is constrained by our modesty and the 12-inch format. (a tip for the adventurous dj: flipped to 33rpm the tune becomes an epic balearic chugger, a late-night psylocibic alternative for the heads.) the synth-heavy sounds of the ambient mix on the flip side harken back to the chill-out rooms of the ‘90s but twenty-some years later bring the best kind of vintage charm.

part 2 of darren allen’s discobar debut takes us on four more precision mindtrips, exploring further the technological influences found in part 1. on ‘atonement’, clattering percussive and plunging bass come laced with a stinsonesque synth line, creating a flightier vibe. the distorted hum of hardware-gone-haywire introduces ‘scanners’, a convulsed tribute to the cronenburg classic that rounds out this ep in typically trippy style.‘tv sickness’ is a post-perlon prowler, the softened shuffle of its first half returning with renewed vigour after a woozy mid-track breakdown, then reprised in a beatless coda.

the italian artist has been a fixture of the underground since her precocious teens, clocking up many miles in control unit with ninni morgia (“it’s like catherine deneuve dumped two cases of post-repulsion psychiatric notes over pere ubu’s dub housing, lit the fuse and, ahem, stood well back” – julian cope), including collaborations with the likes of smegma, factrix, gary smith, aki onda and gate (michael morley of the dead c). through her own label, ultramarine, she has released music by the likes of raymond dijkstra, blood stereo and bene gesserit.

t-coy s carino - an all-time uk acid house classic from 1987. fusing the industrial clicking and whirring of the uk s post-industrial landscape with the lush, melodic, balearic inspired piano lines of the white isle and sucking us all in in the process. a true masterpiece courtesy of mancunians mike pickering, simon topping and the late ritchie close who s combined projects included quando quango, m-people, annette, a certain ratio and more. it s truly hard to believe this record is 30 years old. it can easily stand shoulder to shoulder with anything being released today. the b-side regret is also an amazing, minimal slice of punk-funky 808 driven niceness. super stripped back and with an innocent charm and poppy vibe it is the perfect foil to the latino house chaos of carino on the other side. one could argue that the a-side will take you up, and the b-side will bring you down (in the best possible way!). this classic has been legally reissued by above board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders sony music entertainment. this high quality repress features original 1987 deconstruction records label artwork and has been remastered from sony s original sources by optimum mastering, bristol uk.

the fourth release on trevor jacksons pre- label is by skull. a visceral journey into experimental noise and no wave avant grade beatscapes the last skull release snapz appeared on jacksons own output recordings label in 1999. a seminal collection of tracks that had previously featured on the first two legendary mo wax headz compilations (also featuring autechre, beastie boys, air, and dj shadow) as well as tracks that had also appeared on kevin the bug martins notorious macro dub infection albums during the mid 90s. reactionary sonic statements aimed at the coffee table world of trip hop, fuelled by his dissatisfaction and dissillustionment with hip hop of the time, trevor pushed himself into uncomfortable and far more extreme areas than he had before, areas he felt unable to explore with his underdog productions, which were mainly being utilised for major label remixes at the time. influenced as much by the industrial pioneers, post punk and new wave of the past as the burgeoning post rock scene in the mid 90s, this new set of previously unreleased recordings originally produced between 1996-2000 are equally as intense and visceral as the early releases. dusty samples, raw beats, tape loops, and primitive effects combine to sound as relevant now as when they were initially created.
